It provides knowledge and common sense, explaining in detail using everyday language; foods and their value to our bodies. Food should be good and good for you. Making the choice to put something in your mouth every day and on a continual basis can be the most difficult and most important decision you make.
Reading through this pocket-sized book, I found a treasure trove of information and ideas. Medicinal cookery and recipes for the skin, digestive problems, heart and the immune system as well as joints and the nervous system all broken down and explained so well you will know why, and what you are putting inside, helping you to make the right choices. You will find recipes both fun and rewarding. The Chocolate Orange Truffle Torte sounds decadent and delicious until you read the recipe. The entire recipe uses ingredients which are full of medicinal properties for the heart and circulatory system, as well as other major healthy phytochemicals. “One taste of this and you will feel like all of your birthdays have come at once!” says Pinnock. “Raw chocolate has two major benefits. Firstly, it is an incredibly dense source of the vital mineral magnesium. Magnesium is involved in regulating heart rhythm and maintaining healthy blood pressure. The second major benefit of cacao is the incredibly high antioxidant content. Even though chocolate appears brown, it is in fact a very deep purple colour. This is an incredibly dense concentration of plant pigments that deliver powerful antioxidant benefits. It offers a great explanation as how grains in a whole state assist and effect blood sugar levels, fat healthy nuts and seeds aid inflammation and balancing hormones, and as well herbs and spices and how these amazing plants are so effective yet adding creativity to the kitchen with nature’s most powerful and pleasant medicines.
This recipe is an anti-inflammatory powerhouse. It is suitable for any inflammatory condition, as it contains a powerful cocktail of ingredients known to tone down certain elements of the body’s natural inflammatory responses. I have found that this dish seems to be of particular benefit to sufferers of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis, also referred to as degenerative arthritis. It arises from a wearing down of the cartilage that covers the two bone ends within the joints, and also a “drying out” of the synovial fluid, which provides joint lubrication. While natural medicine provides us with some powerful remedies such as glucosamine that can offer massive relief from OA, foods and dietary changes can also provide relief from inflammatory attacks. - 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 red onions, thinly sliced
- 2 large clove of garlic, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
- 2 green chillies, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
- 1 heaped teaspoon turmeric
- 1 3/4 lb sweet potato, diced with skins left on
- 3/4 cup vegetable stock
- Bunch of spinach, coarsely chopped
- Large handful of fresh coriander leaves (cilantro), coarsely torn
- 1 tablespoon toasted flaked almonds
Heat the oil in a large saucepan and cook the onion, garlic, ginger and chili. When the onion has softened, add all the spices and heat until they are becoming fragrant. Add the sweet potato and stock and simmer for about 15-20 minutes until the sweet potato is soft. At this point add the spinach. Once the spinach is wilted, the curry is ready to serve with coriander leaves, topped with flaked almonds. It is best served with brown rice to increase its nutritional profile further.
This soup is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to dealing with the symptoms of cold and flu. It is a one-pot wonder. Easy and speedy to make.
- 1 red onion
- 2 green chillies
- 4 cloves garlic
- 2 inch piece of ginger
- 1 small butternut squash
- 1 pint or small box shiitake mushrooms
- vegetable stock
Finely chop the onion, chillies, garlic, and ginger. Add to a pan with a little olive oil, and a pinch of salt. Sauté on a mid to high heat until the onion softens. Dice the butternut squash, discarding the seeds. Slice the shiitake mushrooms. Add these two ingredients to the onion, garlic, chili and ginger. Stir well, then add enough vegetable stock to cover all the ingredients. Simmer well, until the squash is soft. At this stage, add the soup to a blender, and blend into a vivid orange, spicy soup.
This sounds like it would be good, sick or not.
